GRADE THREE LAC SESSION – DIGITAL ELLN MODULE 4 LESSON 2
All the Grade 3 teachers were gathered at 9:00 a.m. in the SSC room to attend the face-to-face LAC session. LAC session started with the singing of the nationalistic song led by Ma’am Angeline V. Deinla and was followed by an opening prayer led by Ma’am Carmen A. Cubarol. Ma’am Morena Armada recited the Mission, Vision and Core Values.
Master Teacher Soledad R. Ricafranca gave her welcome remarks. She told us that all the topics discussed will give knowledge and additional learning to the teachers for the duration of the session.
The moderator, Ma’am Melannie A. Flores introduced the three LAC facilitators. Mrs. Amparo L. Lalas, Mrs. Loreta Toledana and Mrs. Daisy Diokno. The first LAC facilitator was Amparo Lalas who recorded her topic. She started the presentation with a short introduction on teaching reading for beginners and NASA PAGBASA ANG PAG – ASA then the Pre-Lesson Activity was about specialized reading instruction whether they agree or disagree on the statements given and then followed by a short text on specialized teaching of reading or reading remediation. It is said that remedial teaching is one way of teaching struggling readers especially the non-readers. To read first the phonics like sounds, syllables, phrases, words, sentences and their comprehension. She told us that under the EFA Global monitoring, every person should enjoy fair and equal access to literacy education.
She also took up the ten guidelines for reading remediation, that it should be observed when conducting remedial reading because reading remediation lessons are delivered differently from regular classroom instruction. She also discussed that there should be an area wherein the remedial class can be done. The regularity and frequency of the sessions should be 2-3 times a week so that the pupil would have enough time to read and the person who will supervise and monitor must be the Master Teacher or the English Coordinator. She also discussed the different steps in implementing the reading remediation program and that it should be followed to ensure effectiveness and success of the program. She also discussed on how to gather information through the PHIL-IRI GST Pre-Test and showed a SAMPLE of one pupil who is a NON-READER.
The next topic discussed by Mrs. Loreta Toledana was about the important domains in remedial lessons such as phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, reading words, fluency, comprehension and the different strategies and examples. She took up the skills needed to develop per domain and gave an example for each domain of literacy methods and materials.
Ma’am Daisy Diokno discussed that the assessment results are only relevant when used to inform the instruction. Data gathered from the Phil. IRI classroom activities, anecdotal records and observation can help teachers to provide a child with the right kind of instruction to address his/her needs. The main thing to remember is that assessment and instruction should be about empowering learners so that they will have the skills to keep up with any challenges.
Sir Joan Ching gave the closing remarks. Followed by the distribution of certificates to the LAC facilitators and participants. The LAC facilitators congratulated and thanked everyone for the success of the 1 ½ months LAC session. The technical working groups led by Ma’am Melannie Flores and Imelda Taguines helped operate the TV presentation.
