GRADE THREE LAC SESSION – DIGITAL ELLN MODULE 4 LESSON 1
The LAC session, which was held online via Google Meet last May 27, 2021, was about Assessing Reading Performance using Classroom Based Assessment Tools. The session began with a solemn opening prayer which was led by Mrs. Loreta Toledana. It was followed by a heartfelt nationalistic song performed by Ms. Eugenia Oshima. Afterwards, Ms. Jhumin Abareta lead to recite the Deped VMV to everyone. Then Ms. Soledad Ricafranca, the Master Teacher In-charge, delivered the opening remarks. A message was given by the very supportive principal Sir Carlito Adducul, which he stresses the importance of the LAC Session about Digital ELLN. After that, Dr. Rodrigo Morales, the Education Program Supervisor in English, gave a powerful inspirational message to everyone. Before the SLAC Proper Session, Mrs. Lenny Dela Torre introduced the LAC of Facilitators. Ms. Jhumin Abareta and Ms. Eugenia Oshima presented their PowerPoint Presentations that were very informative and enlightening. Assessment is an essential aspect of literacy instruction. Assessment results tell teachers are well developed, as well as what skills are the least developed. Based on this information, teachers can design lessons to help learners develop the skills that are weak or lacking. In other words, assessment helps to make teaching more specific to meet learner’s needs. The following National Assessment Tools are used to describe the learning performance or children:
Early Grades Math Assessment (EGMA)
Early Grades Reading Assessment (EGRA)
Early Language Literacy, and Numeracy Assessment (ELLNA)
The Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI) is a tool for teachers to identify students who are experiencing difficulties in learning to read early on. Thus, it is intended as a preventive measure for teachers to catch students before they fail. The Phil-IRI was drafted in support of the Every Child A Reader Program (ECARP). The tool only provides approximations and must be used in combination with other available sources of information. And only teachers who have undergone the necessary training must administer it. The Phil-IRI Group Screening Tests can be administered by Filipino and English subject teachers in Grades 3 to 6 (Filipino) and Grades 4 to 6 (English), while the Phil-IRI Graded Passages are to be administered by ELLN-trained teachers to individual students who need further assessment. Finally, the session ended with a closing remarks by Mr. Joan Ching.
